Introduction

Hello!  My name is Carey McCachern.  I am from Edmond, Oklahoma.  This is my last year at OU, and I can't wait for an exciting semester.  My major is Electrical Engineering, and I love to learn.

Carey in Cinque Terre

This summer, I worked for an underwater robotics company in Berkeley, California.  When I graduate, I hope to use my degree to build robots for sea or space exploration.  One of my tasks this summer was to make a 3D model of a shipwreck in Lake Tahoe.  I attached a GoPro to the bottom of my robot, and flew it around the sailboat pictured below.  This is one of the approximately ten thousand photos that the GoPro took during the dive.

I tend to collect hobbies.  I enjoy photography, Geocaching, backpacking, astronomy, and I'm an amateur radio operator just to name a few.  If I can combine my hobbies, then that is even better.  The photograph below is an image I took of my friend Greg on our way to go backpacking in Colorado.

I also really enjoy biking.  I bike to campus, the grocery store, and just about any other place I need to go within 5 miles of my apartment.  Bicycles are an amazing invention: you get to your destination, enjoy the outdoors, build muscle, are more environmentally friendly, avoid parking hassle, and save money all at the same time.  Although most people in Oklahoma exclusively use cars to go anywhere, transportation is different in other parts of the world.  For instance, despite lots of car traffic in Berkeley, CA, the city is very bike-friendly.  The photograph below was taken from the Berkeley I-80 bridge which is about a 5 minute walk from where I worked.  While there is much more highway traffic in the Bay than in Oklahoma, a lot of people ride their bikes or take the BART.  With public transit and a bike, I could get almost anywhere in the Bay area without ever needing a car.

Another one of my hobbies is traveling.  I spent last semester in Arezzo, Italy, a town in Tuscany.  Almost every weekend I travelled to someplace new.

Duomo in Arezzo

With every new trip comes a new map.  Maps are magical.  And while online maps are great for showing how to get from point A to point B, print maps give the big picture.  In addition to a collection of maps I own from places I've been, I also own an atlas for planning road trips (An atlas is a book of maps for those of you who can't remember a time before smartphones and Google Maps).  Just looking at an atlas makes me want to travel everywhere.  I'm even tempted to join a group called the Extra Miler Club whose members have the goal of traveling to as many US counties as possible.

Right now I am reading a book called Blue Highways by William Least Heat-Moon.  It is a story about a man who travels the United States by only driving on small roads, or "blue highways" in his Rand McNally Atlas.  The idea is a good philosophy for life as well as travel.  Too often, we focus on getting to a destination, but we don't enjoy the path there.  On my way to Colorado this summer, we attempted to avoid the Interstates, and I plan to continue traveling blue highways whenever possible.  Below is picture I took of one such blue highway just before we got to Great Sand Dunes National Park.  It really is a much more enjoyable experience to get off the beaten path and to explore somewhere new.

  1. Carey, I was so curious to read your Introduction after learning about your summer... and wow, this is so great! I have discovered much too late that I should have been an engineer (I started college as a math major, but ditched that when I discovered FOREIGN LANGUAGES... I could not resist) — anyway, I am always excited when there are engineering majors in class: as you may have figured out already, I am a big fan of MAKING things (telling stories, making memes, publishing blogs)... and of course engineers are the great "makers" of our time. And oh, my husband would enjoy talking with you too: ham radio is one of his things, and photography, and he is always sharing cool GoPro things with me that he finds online. For all the 10+ years I lived in the Bay area, I never had a car: I was not a biker, but man, I knew ALL the buses in Oakland and in Berkeley, and I took BART a lot too (I lived in Daly City for a while, which was perfect: I had a great hour-long study session each way; back then Daly City was the end of the line — it was before BART went to the airport).

So, I have a book recommendation for you: do you know Robert Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance? Greatest book ever in my opinion (seriously, I have re-read it pretty much every year since I was 16, so I guess that is 30 times or more now). Among the many other things he talks about there, one great topic is exactly how important it is to take those small roads and local highways and stay off the interstate: both literally and figuratively.

Also, I have to ask: do you know Cody Taylor? He is an electrical engineering major (about Cody - scroll down), and he is the HERO of Indian Epics this semester, because he has been organizing all the books and ebooks and audiobooks for us in Bizzell. Anyway, if you know him, you can let him know what you think about all of this. I am really excited to see what people will do with all the stuff Cody has set up for us, and I hope you will enjoy it!

  2. Hi Carey, I have always wanted to go to Italy. I was planning to take Ochem class in Arezzo, Italy. However, I ended up taking ochem earlier than expected and did not get a chance to study abroad in Italy. I am so glad you got that opportunity. I am guessing you went there with OU. I enjoyed reading your introduction.

  4. Carey! I had no idea you were in Berkeley this summer (or in this class)! I was in Santa Barbara for most of the summer, but made the trek up there for the last week of the summer, visiting San Francisco and staying in Oakland! Liked reading about your love of maps- I got to learn how to use them (a little embarrassing, I know) this summer on my drive to California. You're right about the difference between paper maps and electronic ones- while I don't think I'd get too far without my GPS on any given road trip, being able to pick out interesting places on a paper map to stop at along the way was really fun!

  5. Carey, I am so jealous you got to spend a semester abroad. Being as this is my last class at OU, studying abroad is something I will always regret not doing. I have never been out of the United States, so Italy is at the top of my list of places I want to go. I hope to start saving my money so I can take a trip next summer, but it definitely won't be the same experience as studying abroad with my peers. That is so awesome, I am sure you had the best time!

  6. Hello Carey,
First let me say that all of your pictures are amazing. My favorite picture is the one that you took of your friend outside in New Mexico. I loved reading your story about what you did over the summer. I have been fascinated in Robots, ever since I saw the movie iRobot starring Will Smith. I would like to share with you, that they had 3D printing in the Bizzel library over the summer, which I thought was really cool to watch, because I had never seen anything like it before. I think that alternate modes of transportation are more convenient than driving a car. I will say that I have not rode a bike in over 10 years because of a incident that happened to me when I was younger, but I would love to conquer my fears and ride a bike again. I usually just ride the bus to get around Norman, the only time I drive my car is when I am going home. How did you like your trip to Italy? Did you eat a lot of gelato? Do you have any more pictures to share with us?

  7. Hi Carey,

First can I just say that I wish I could study abroad because I'm super jealous of you right now and your pictures are absolutely amazing! Also you need a round of applause because I know biking to campus can't be easy but I bet having a different travel option is a lot easier than trying to fight people for a parking spot because that struggle is a bit real. Well I hope you enjoy the semester and senior year! It's going to be great and I can't wait to see more pictures!!

  8. Hi Carey! It sounds like you had an awesome summer in Berkeley. I have a couple friends who live there, and it's such an amazing school. I also have a map collection, including every major city I've traveled to. A lot of them are maps I actually used when I was studying in France so every one has a story. Studying Abroad is such a great experience and I'm glad you were able to go to Arezzo!

  9. Well your introduction was by far the best I had read so far. I really enjoyed the pictures they all looked incredible. Your work with robotics looks really interesting are you hoping to do anything specific with exploration? I am curious what you would recommend for your favorite place to travel to would be. I have to say that the picture from Italy looks the best.

  10. Nice to meet you! I enjoyed getting to read what you had to say about biking. I have recently begun biking with my fiancé and it is something we both really enjoy. Norman is a very bike friendly community and Normanites should do it more often. Your pictures were beautiful I really enjoyed looking at them. I hope you enjoyed your time in California! I am originally from California and absolutely love it.

  11. Hey Carley! My brother is also an electrical enginner. It is really cool how your so into robotics. Wow your photography is amazing. Where in new mexico did you take that photo? Its incredible. I was also interested in biking to OU since parking passes are way too expensive, Lloyd noble is usually full and biking would be quicker. Anyways keep up your hobbies and good luck in your endeavors!

  12. Carey! Hi there! Did you go to high school in Edmond? I was just wondering because I attended Santa Fe H.S. in Edmond. You must be a brilliant engineer! It blew my mind that you worked for an underwater robotics company! I hope you continue engineering underwater robots to explore the ocean because unfortunately we don't know a lot about the ocean compared to our knowledge of space. Congratulations on your last year and never stop learning!

  13. While I was reading your introduction, I started to miss living abroad when you began to mention riding your bike everywhere. Then I keep reading and I see that you went to Arezzo to study abroad, also! I love your style of photography. I know just who to contact now if I ever want to see great photos of OU's study center in Arezzo. I also share a love for traveling and even atlases - I have an antique atlas that my grandfather gave me!

  14. Hey Carey McCachern! You seem to have so many different hobbies. Your photography skills are very impressive. It is crazy how you are able to balance so many fun things into your life while still doing such as hard major. The robotics work you did is impressive. It is cool how you are trying to do your part to mke the environment better. I would love to bike everywhere I go, but I would probably have to take at least 5 showers a day!

  15. That is a lot of hobbies! I think that is super great and you seem to be very enthusiastic about life which, in my opinion, makes everything so much better! Travelling is so amazing and I love to hike, but unfortunately I've never had anyone with whom to go backpacking. It seems like such an awesome opportunity to get close to nature, but I've never known anyone interested in going. That picture you took with your friend in it is amazing! Where in New Mexico was that taken? I recently went skiing in NM and it's absolutely gorgeous there.

Good luck on your final year!

  16. Wow, we have a lot in common! This is also my last year here at OU and I am a Chemical/Biomedical Engineering major. I too have a passion for astronomy and backpacking and although I am not very good at it, I enjoy photography (especially when it involves taking pictures of landscapes while backpacking). Traveling is a great hobby to have and I have never thought to only use the "blue highways" as a means of getting around; that would be a very fun idea I'll have to try some time!

  17. I love your outlook on life. I also find it very interesting and inspiring, to me, your love for traveling. I always say "I wish", but I need to stop with that and make traveling for me a reality. I have only been on a plane once and that was barely six months ago. I've never been anywhere but the states surrounding Oklahoma and I would love to just travel and see new things they way you have. But, good for you! Your life seems so excited and I wish you a great rest of your semester!

  18. Hello Carey! I love to learn too! Your summer sounds far more interesting than mine; underwater robotics sounds interesting and fun. I too am slowly collecting hobbies. Biking is definitely a good way to get around and reduce your impact on the environment. I can certainly appreciate that. I’m definitely with you on maps (I have a geography based degree!). I grew up studying atlases and spinning the globe at my grandparent’s house. Thanks for recommending the Blue Highways book. I think I’ll have to give it a read!
    Good luck with your studies!

  19. First of all, your photography is excellent. What kind of camera and lenses do you have? Those are some creative shots! I adore Lake Tahoe. It is one of the prettiest places in the West. Your traveling stories sound really cool. I have been to Haiti and Nicaragua and quite a few states. I really want to go overseas though. Keep up the good work!

  20. Hi Carey! I really liked the pictures you attached. They look very cool. I think it is awesome that you had the opportunity to study abroad. I don't think I could ride a bicycle to go anywhere but I definitely think its great that you do. I also love to travel and hope to visit Italy as well.

  21. Wow. It you do have a lot of hobbies. I wish I could travel! I have always wanted to but I have never been able to find time in my schedule. Full time job and 2 kids doesn't leave much room for travel but one day I hope to be able to! I love you pictures! I think that they are so cool. Good luck with everything you have going on. I hope you're enjoying the semester!

  22. Hey Carey. That is so cool that you are working with deep sea and space exploration. I am a scuba diver and every time I'm in the wonder I can't help but think about how little we know about what's going on in the depths. Sounds like you're going to have a very exciting career. That picture of your friend looking at the milky way is awesome.. Photography is something I'm not very good at, but I really enjoy photos like that. I think it's really cool that you chose the bike as your primary form of transportation. It really is crazy how much it benefits you. I hope you have a great rest of the semester and good luck with exploring Mars!
